Absalom's rebellion against David's authority began very early. When his sister Tamar was raped by her half-brother Amnon, Absalom encourages her to stay silent, and he prevents her from marrying Amnon, as the law required. Instead, when he got the chance, he killed Amnon. Then he ran away and remained in hiding for a few years until Joab underhandedly convinced David to allow him to return. When he does return, he began to turn the people against David. He lied, and deceived them to think that David is no longer a good King. He then told his father that he needed to go to Hebron to fulfill a vow. David told him to go in peace. While in Hebron, Absalom begins gathering an army. Someone finally informs David of Absalom's rebellion, and he immediately flees and makes his way to Mahanaim. Absalom rallies his troops and goes to fight against David, by this time however, David has also gathered an army. During the battle, Absalom encounters some of David soldiers by himself, and while he is fleeing, his hair is caught up in a tree, and the mule he is riding keeps going, leaving him hanging in the tree. One of David's men saw this and went and told Joab, who at once went to where Absalom was and struck him down. When David heard about this, he was devastated, and mourned for his son.
