One day, Jesse went to David, who was out in the field tending the flocks, and gave him some food and sent him to visit his brothers in the army. Saul's army was fighting against the Philistines, whose champion was Goliath. At six cubits (about 9'9"), he towered over everyone else on the battlefield. "He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels (about 125 lbs.); on his legs he wore bronze greaves , and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels (about 15 lbs.). At this time, David was probably younger than 15. While some speculate that he was older than this, it is very unlikely. To be in the army, you had to be at least 20, according to Numbers 1:3. 1 Samuel tells us that only David's eldest three brothers served in the army, and most likely putting the fourth oldest at 19, just too young to be in the army. David would have to be at least four years younger, which would put him at about 14. The fact that he was young, however, does not mean he was small or weak. In fact, 1 Samuel 16:18 describes David as "a brave man and a warrior." When David comes before Saul to ask if he might fight Goliath, he is looked down upon because of his youth, not his stature. Nevertheless, he goes up to fight against Goliath with nothing more than a sling and five stones. Goliath taunts him, thinking a mere boy is nothing compared to him. But God was on David's side, and he flung one stone, and it hit Goliath in the forehead, killing him. David then cut off the giant's head and took it to Saul.
