David and Saul first met when David was brought to play the lyre for Saul. Then David defeated Goliath in battle, which was the beginning of Saul's jealousy. After this, David defeated the Philistines with the help of God, and the people sang his praises. They chanted, "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands." From this point on, Saul's jealousy only increased. Nevertheless, Saul promised that David may marry his oldest daughter. Later though, he broke his promise and instead gave David one of his other daughters, Michal. But soon, he grew even more jealous, and he made a first attempt to kill David by throwing a spear at him. But God caused him to miss, and David fled. He escape Saul's wrath many times, aided by Michal and Jonothan. When Saul was chasing David, he stopped in the cave where David and his men were hiding, unaware of their presence. David sneaks up behind him and cuts off a corner of Saul's robe. He then approaches Saul and shows him how he could have killed him, but did not. Saul makes an oath to leave David alone, so long as David does not harm Saul's descendants.
